South X South Lawn

untitled VR Tiltbrush project 2016

I’m excited to announce a new Virtual Reality project I’ve been working on at MTV.
The immersive VR work is a meditation on children’s lives that are tragically lost to gun violence everyday in the United States.

The untitled work is being shown at The Whitehouse in Washington DC on October 3 as part of the South X South Lawn Festival of Art, Ideas and Action. I am honored to be given the opportunity to take part in this incredible event.

I created the work utilizing Tiltbrush virtual reality software as part of MTV’s OPEN YOUR EYES project.

In late 2013 Lele Severi, founder of 8-Ball Zine Fair installed and curated The Newsstand in an actual defunct newsstand inside the Lorimer Street/Metropolitan Avenue subway station in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The Newsstand was a re-imagining of the traditional newsstand format stocked with independent zines, prints and records, becoming a platform for creativity and exposure. The Newsstand‘s closing day was January 25 2014.

A year and a half later, MoMA opened the 2015 installment of its annual New Photography exhibition titled Ocean of Images. The exhibition features the work of nineteen international photographers, including work by New York based Italian, Lele Severi, with the installation of Newsstand. This installation is a re-staging of the original underground project space.

There are a whole lot of projects taking place at the Newsstand over the upcoming months. Check out the MoMA site for details.

My untitled BBoy print that was on view in the original Lorimer Street Newsstand is now part of the 2015/16 MoMA installation. You can check out my original post here or visit my webstore to purchase an edition of the print.

I’m really excited that my work was included in this group showing at QUT Art Mueseum in Brisbane and that the museum ran with my work for the title image. The show examines the multitude of ways in which this particular group of artists utilize text in their work.

The Black Arts

Wednesday July 15, 7-10pm. Outlaw Arts, 44 Bowery, Manhattan, NYC.

Curated by ekg TAS.
Art exhibited by: Cash4. CarnageNYC. Darkclouds. Darkypoop. Droid “The Boring Kid” 907. Isabel LaSala. Oyama Enrico Isamu Letter. Micah Lindenberger. magthree. Ashley Maximillian TAS. Noxer DOD. THE ABSTRACT NTEL. Shaun O’Connor. Poesia. Roycer. Gabriel J. Shuldiner. Skewville. Adam Void. Jefferson Wells TAS. Jhon Coley Wright.

This is the first in a series of broadcast graphics and an animation for #theblackartsvol1, which is a group exhibition of art that is based in the color black and other conceptual iterations on that theme. Unlike the typical “white cube” gallery, the Outlaw Arts space will be transformed into a black cube holodeck, lit only by yellowish vintage-filament lightbulbs, creating a ceremonial atmosphere of Black Matter concoction, aesthetic mutations, and renegade transmissions.

Signpainting with Jon Bocksel of Handsignpainters in Long Island City by the 59th St Bridge.

Story goes that the original sign had been in place since the sixties and maintained by a father and son duo of signpainters. The original sign was recently tagged and then accidentally painted out by a contractor via a miscommunication.

The new sign represents a reconstructed and slightly updated version of the original. The project was Jon’s largest sign commission to date and a worthy feat of logistics and planning. It took two and a half days to load and construct the three thousand pounds of scaffolding and two and a half (long) days of painting dodging bouts of heavy rain and scorching New York City heat.

*note: The new sign still bears the old NYC phone # and area code.
